Teus Nobel

Jazztrompettist Teus Nobel is de afgelopen jaren productiever dan ooit. In 2019 bracht hij liefst twee albums uit: Journey Of Man en het met een Edison bekroonde Saudade. In 2021 zien wederom twee albums het licht. Op het in april uitgebrachte album Tanto Amor verdiept hij zich in de Braziliaanse sferen die hij op Saudade reeds had verkend en dit najaar komt hij met een pure jazzplaat, getiteld Pleasure Is The Measure. Een live-album welteverstaan, opgenomen tijdens 4 uitverkochte concerten in jazzclub Paradox (Tilburg).

Pleasure Is The Measure Op het live-album Pleasure Is The Measure geeft Teus zijn visie op de cultuursector weer. In zijn ogen bevat de opvatting dat ‘cultuur voor iedereen moet zijn’ het risico dat cultuurmakers gaan creëren met de publieke opinie in hun achterhoofd. Cultuur, in dit geval muziek, wint juist enorm aan zeggingskracht als het authentiek is; als er de inspiratie en vooral ook het plezier van de kunstenaar in doorklinkt. Pas dán wordt het publiek bereikt en geïnspireerd. Of, zoals de titel al aangeeft: plezier is de maatstaf!

Repertoire Deze opvatting leverde een aantal prachtige composities op, zoals “Merino”, “Comboio” en “Bobbypump”, waarin juist datgene wordt gefaciliteerd wat de Teus Nobel | Liberty Group zo eigen maakt – de muzikale ruimte om op ieder gewenst moment de compositie compleet op zijn kop te zetten. Ook de compositie “Wabi Sabi” is hierin een treffend voorbeeld. Dit begrip is afkomstig uit de Japanse taal en staat voor het vermogen om schoonheid te kunnen zien in imperfectie. Solistisch schuurt Teus tijdens deze compositie doelbewust langs de randen van de harmonische mogelijkheden, waarmee hij zijn medemusici maximaal uitdaagt. En dit alles met het vuur en de urgentie die opnemen voor een live publiek met zich mee brengt.

Reeds in 2019 bestempelde De Volkskrant de formatie Teus Nobel | Liberty Group, na een live concert in het Amsterdamse Bimhuis, als ‘een van de fijnste belevingen die een liefhebber van live jazz zich kan wensen’ (5 sterren recensie). En datzelfde Bimhuis is dan ook exact waar het album gepresenteerd zal worden, op 19 september 2021.

On album Pleasure Is The Measure, recorded live, Teus presents his vision on the arts & culture industry. In his opinion, the idea that 'culture should be for everyone' contains the risk that arts & culture makers will just create with public opinion in mind. If you take music for example, music gains enormous eloquence when it is authentic; when it reflects the inspiration and especially the pleasure of the artist. It’s just then when the heart of the public will be reached and inspired. So, as the title implies: pleasure is the measure! Teus’ view resulted in a number of beautiful compositions, such as “Merino”, “Comboio” and “Bobbypump”, in which exactly is displayed by the Teus Nobel | Liberty Group what makes them unique – the musical freedom to turn a composition completely upside down at any desired moment. The composition “Wabi Sabi” is a striking example of this. Wabi Sabi is the Japanese expression for the ability to see beauty in imperfection. As a soloist, Teus deliberately rubs the edges of the harmonic possibilities during this composition, thereby challenging his fellow musicians to the maximum. All this comes with the fire and urgency of a live recording in front of an enthusiastic audience.

Jazz Trumpet player Teus Nobel and his Liberty Group deliver with their single Wabi Sabi another example of their way of making music together, improvising, challenging each other to the max which leads again to an upswept track full of musical ideas. Due to the irregular time signatures and harmonic excursions we would almost overlook that Wabi Sabi actually originates from a minor blues. On an album that for listeners is the closest thing a live concert, Wabi Sabi is the magnum opus.
